Following a mere five days of official retail availability in Japan, publisher Enterbrain is reporting that Nintendo’s third-generation DS Lite gaming handheld has defied the odds of established market saturation by selling an impressive 170,000 units.

 

Ahead of this latest retail push, Nintendo had amassed some 84 million units sales attributed to its original chunky DS (2004) and the superior DS Lite White (2006), which came equipped with better screen resolution and a slimmer, more elegant form factor.

Comparatively, Nintendo’s innovative, motion-sensing Wii home console has sold some 35 million units since its arrival in November of 2006.
